Scullions

"It is the mark of a mean, vulgar and ignoble spirit to dwell on the thought of food before meal times or worse to dwell on it afterwards, to discuss it and wallow in the remembered pleasures of every mouthful. Those whose minds dwell before dinner on the spit, and after on the dishes, are fit only to be scullions. "
-St Francis de Sales

It's a quote that has come to mind several times in the past few days. Many people, when I show them this quote, are very taken aback. They don't like it. But after reading a couple of things here and there (and listening to the book discussion tonight), it strikes me as an important message, especially in today's world. It is quotes like this that brought me to read more of Saint Francis de Sales and I'm so glad I did. He is SO wise.

I recently began reading "Introduction to the Devout Life" and I am CONVICTED. He was indeed very wise. Which book was your quote from?

oh, and thanks for the link! :-)

Actually, I didn't pull that from a book. I can't remember what I was doing when I came across that quote of his but I remember reading it and being blown away. So I scribbled it down on a scrap piece of paper and stuck it in my journal.

Since then I have picked up a copy of Thy Will Be Done! -- great book! It's sub-title (I guess) is 'Fifty-eight letters to souls troubled by problems that afflict each of us today: anger, frustration, grief and sickness, difficulties in praying, and even lack of faith - with wise, practical remedies for each.'

I need to pick up a copy of Introduction to the Devout Life. I want to be convicted too! :)

I'm reading that book, too! And another by St. Francis de Sales - How to know God's Will for you. That's not the exact title, but I began reading and it refers back to "Devout", so I'm going to finish that one first.

he is indeed wise, but the whole food thing? to a restaurant owner?

you want people to think about it, talk about it afterwards...

~sigh~

m2 - me too! Even though I'm not a restaurant owner. I always think of feeding my family and friends as sort of sacramental, and to be enjoyed. I also really enjoy reading books like A YEar in Provance where there are lots of meals. Feasts, I should say!
